Funny piece over at Condohype. Bob Rennie as much as admitted on air to Bill Good that he’s grown filthy rich overselling granite and stainless steel.
Caveat emptor, and all that, but it sounds like Condo King Bob is having second thoughts about his “contribution” to life in Vancouver. If he thinks too hard he may decide he wants to “give something back” by running for public office. Let’s hope he sticks to his art collection.

A couple of interesting things about that BC Business article–one was that when Rennie got his start, he “sent away” for his real estate license.
I’m not sure what the writer meant by “sent away.” Did one just have to fill out a form, and not have to write any exams or meet any professional standards when Rennie started out?
He decided on real estate instead of bar tending. With all due respect to bar tenders, guiding people in the purchase of property is a bit more complex than shaking up a gin fizz; for the average person, their principal residence is also their principal investment. Rennie may have figured this out on the way up to his first or second fortune, but I’m not sure every realtor does.
The second thing was what he said about the difference between the east and west sides of Vancouver. It was spot on. When I grew up on the west side anything east of Cambie Street was an amorphous mess. When I moved east in Vancouver as an adult I became aware of the complexity of east side neighbourhoods, and developed a disdain for the willful naivety of the denizens of the west side.
Now I live in Burnaby, which makes up in green space what it lacks in beaches, and wonder what all the fuss was about Vancouver in the first place.

This opening quote from the BC Business article is priceless. I love it so much.

Another great Rennie article about Rennie and his aspirations, called the Long Walk Home. Interesting reading:
